Excellent pull-up bar, exactly what I was looking for. The welding is high quality, the handles are sturdy and the grips are comfortable. The extra parallel grips have a tough padding on them. The normal grips are metal with some texture to prevent slipping. The paint also helps prevent slipping.

The entire bar is about 46" wide, the mounts/parallel grips are about 25" apart. The mounts give about 8.5" to the parallel grip attachment holes, leaving about 4-5" of leeway when deciding how high to mount it.

Only minor issue with the bar is that it had some metal shavings rattling around inside, but they're pretty easy to shake out.

Mounting is pretty straightforward, but I suggest using two clamps to hold the bar in place, and carefully marking locations for each of the four holes. The included mounting hardware is only for 2xX joists, so I had to buy 5.5 inch bolts for a 4x10 joist.

Lastly, once up, this bar just plain looks hardcore. Mount it somewhere visible, and you'll want to use it.

I'm glad to see a company servicing this market niche with a product that doesn't involve a door frame. If you have an exposed joist available you'll be happy with this version or the one that doesn't have the hammer grips. I recently finshed the entire P90X program using a pull up bar that consisted of galvanized plumbing pipes hanging from ropes in my basement. I'm preparing for another round of P90X and what a relief it is to replace my hack with this rock-solid work of art. Installation was a walk in the park on a 2xX joist. I'm 5' 11" and have an 8' ceiling in my basement - there's plenty of room to accomodate this bar. Just to level-set expectations...the bar is hollow. The image looks solid steel. But this fact doesn't deter from its superior chin up bar prowess - I'm very satisfied. Another reviewer mentioned padding on the hammer grips, mine didn't come with that. It was packaged well to protect the product during shipping. Worth the money IMO. Mine will see a lot of action, and I don't really care if the paint chips off as others have mentioned.

I waffled some before choosing this chin-up bar over one of the lower cost, portable ones that can move from door to door within your home or apartment.
I even borrowed a popular portable chin-up bar from a friend to see how it would work in my house.
After the side by side comparison, I am glad I made the choice to go with this model.

A few observations:

1 - This chin up bar is the same quality of one that you'd find in your gym. The other, more portable, ones that hook above the molding in a door way, are not.

2 - The portable models do mark up your walls and don't work with many sizes of molding.

3 - This bar has textured metal at grip points (as the description states) which, in my opinion, is vastly superior to any kind of sponge-grip you might find on other bars.

4 - I use wrist wraps for chin ups and pull ups - which is made much more difficult if you have to use those sponge grips. The wrist wraps work perfectly with the textured metal grips on this bar.

At the end of the day, chin-ups are my favorite exercise to do on a *back day* at the gym - I don't think there's a better exercise for your back. It's always better to get to the gym than work out at home but if you HAVE to work out at home for whatever reason, this chin-up bar makes getting a gym quality back workout possible.

I think most people who buy the portable chin up bars are people who want to *start* working out and think that might be a good place to begin - which is fine. However - I'd suggest that if you already do chin-ups regularly, you'll be happy with this bar where you likely would not be with one of the models that hooks into the top of a door frame.

This bar made of very solid construction. It is easy to install and the bolts fit my joists easily. If I were you, I'd mark the first holes first, drill them, and when the bolts are in, mark the upper holes and then drill those. I tried to mark and drill first and I guess I wasn't holding the bar still enough. Once installed, the bar feels solid when performing pull ups. Also it is still high enough that I don't have to stoop down when walking under it.

The joist mounted pull up bar is the best (in every sense of the word) chin-up/pull-up bar on the market. This is not your ordinary home pull-up bar. Its heavy duty design can handle any abuse, be it at home or a commercial gym. The manufacturer of this bar really did not cut any corners. And it may seem like an expensive pull up bar at $70+ (with traverse handles), but it is the best $70+ that I ever spent in my life.

Listen, I've tried many pull-up bars out there and they are laughable in comparison. That said, you really come to appreciate this pull-up bar during installation, which was a breeze BTW. I mounted the bar to a single joist in my basement. The mounting hardware supplied was ideal and the bar feels rock solid. But as others have pointed out, you may need to purchase longer bolts to accommodate for your joist size and/or layout.

After years of weight-lifting, I came to the conclusion that pull-ups are the best strength training exercises you can do for upper-body strength and muscle mass, PERIOD. Actually, I stopped lifting weights altogether when I realized that calisthenic exercises provide the most effective means of getting and staying fit.
